Parish Update – July 1, 2020

School Offering Envelopes

In this fiscal year’s pack of church envelopes, there are no longer special “school offering” envelopes.
This is because St. Brendan School is a ministry of St. Brendan Parish. Like all grade schools in our diocese, our grade school does not charge tuition for active parishioners.

Instead, the school is primarily funded by the parish, and the parish receives its revenue through donations (tithing). In short, all of us as parishioners are expected to tithe according to our ability (e.g., 5% of income to parish, 5% to other charities). And then, on the basis of that tithing, the parish funds its ministries, including the school.

If you were in the practice of using school envelopes, you can now:

  • put your tithing in the regular Sunday offering envelope instead;
  • give online to the regular Sunday offering;
  • speak with Beth Feger at the parish office (581-4720) about tithing through ACH (automatic withdrawal) from your bank account.

The elimination of special school envelopes helps emphasize the unity of the school with the broader parish and the common responsibility of all parishioners. It also increases financial transparency, avoiding the false impression that offerings made to the school are totally distinct from those made to the parish.
